List of items needed

wool

twigs – green

binding twine

Secateurs

sharp pocket knife

Scissors

Washing up liquid

Finding the wool.

Go out into the countryside and walk through the sheep fields, adhering to the path.  There is normally pieces of sheep’s wool caught on trees and barbed wire.  This is perfect for your project.  There is always the internet to find suppliers of raw wool.

Washing the wool.

Wash the wool in a sink with warm water and the washing up liquid.  Agitate the wool to get all dirt and foreign objects out of the wool.

Leave to dry.

Brushing the wool.

I used two clean pet hair brushes to drag the hair through.  Place the wool onto of one of the pet brushes, then proceed to use the second brush to drag it over the top of the first brush.  Keep brushing till you have all the wool fibres aligned straight.  Careful taken the wool off the brush, this is the first step in constructing the wool paintbrush tip.

Constructing the wool paintbrush tip.

After completing the brushing of the wool, place the wool on a table.  Here you can decide how large or small you would like your brush to be.  Leave to one side whilst we now make the handle of the brush.

Twig foraging

Take your secateurs out into the countryside, hedgerows or your own garden.  We are looking for a straight-ish green twig (this means a twig off a living branch, hedgerow)  around the thickness of your index finger, the length is down to personal preference.  The length of my twigs are around six-seven inches.  Have a think about how you are to use this brush as you may prefer a longer or shorter handle.

Cut some green twigs and bring them back home.

Twig whittling

Take a twig to work on and your pen knife.

CAUTION: always use the blade of the knife working away from your body.

Shave off the burrs, small branches and anything else on the twig handle.  We are wanting the handle to be free of large lumps.

Choose on end of the twig to work on with your knife.  We are wanting to create a half-inch in length, around 5mm in depth all the way around the top of the twig.  This is for the wool to fit snug around the top of the twig handle.  The length and depth may differ depending on the size of the brush tip you are creating.

Lay the brushed wool onto a table.  Place the whittled twig at one end of the brushed wool.  Cut a length of bookbinding string.  Pick up the wool and twig, as tight as you can, wrap the wool around the whittled end of the twig.  When you are happy with the tip, proceed to wrap the bookbinding string around the wool with the whittled end of the twig (this should be hidden the middle of the wool).

Tie the string as tightly as possible.

Shaping the paintbrush tip

The final part is to shape the tip.  You decide on what kind of tip you require.  You are ready to use your brush!

The brushes are best suited to watercolours.  Enjoy using your new paintbrush, and endless supply from nature.
